Swiss-SAR
The Search and Rescue (SAR) Service is placed under the responsibility of the Federal Office for Civil Aviation (FOCA), the
Swiss Maritime Navigation Office (SMNO) and the Federal Office for Communication (OFCOM). It is operated by the Swiss Air-Rescue
Guard – REGA (Rescue Coordination Center – RCC Zurich) and by the Swiss Air Force (search flights).
Search and Rescue service in Switzerland is provided in accordance with ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization)
standards and recommended practices (ICAO Annex 12), Swiss AIP and recommendations by the technical commission of the Swiss
police forces.
The Search and Rescue area encompasses the territories of the Swiss Confederation and of the Principality of Liechtenstein.
This area enclosed by the frontiers is not coincident in all parts with the Flight Information Region Switzerland.
The RCC Zurich (designated SAR point of contact (SPOC) for Switzerland) continuously receives distress alerts from Swiss
registered ELT, EPIRB or PLB. This service is provided in accordance with the International Aeronautical and Maritime Search
and Rescue Manual (IAMSAR), jointly published by ICAO and IMO (International Maritime Organization) as well as Cospas-Sarsat
operational recommendations. The RCC Zurich does not coordinate any search and rescue operation abroad.
Observations and notifications concerning aircraft, vessels or persons in state of emergency or any activation of an emergency
beacon (ELT, EPIRB or PLB) are to be reported at any time to:
